McLaren has parted ways with Robert Fernley just one day after Fernando Alonso failed to qualify for the Indy500. Fernley was put in charge of McLaren's Indycar efforts but has left after the shock result.
Fernando Alonso missed out by 0.2 mph in the average four-lap speed. Fernley, former Force India deputy principal, was only contracted until the 2019 Indy500.
Alonso was hoping to find the final piece of the Triple Crown jigsaw having already won the Monaco Grand Prix and Le Mans 24. Following the defeat, Alonso didn't give much detail on what went wrong.
“We didn’t do the job. We were not quick enough, simple. The others, they did better. We congratulate them. But at the same time, I think only McLaren is the only team in motorsport that won the Indy 500, won the Le Mans 24 Hours, won the Formula 1 championship. You can only do that if you try," Alonso told the press after qualifying.
