Ricciardo warns against canceling historic races: 'They are the core of F1'

More and more historic races are in danger of disappearing from the Formula 1 calendar as they have to make way for new venues. Daniel Ricciardo warns against losing races that he believes are at the heart of motorsport's premier class.

With the increasing presence of new Grands Prix at venues willing to pay deeply, more and more races at traditional circuits are at risk. This even applies to the Monaco Grand Prix, which has been on the calendar since the first official Formula One season in 1950.

Increasing interest from the United States and the Middle East means that more and more races are in danger of having to make way for others, as interest far exceeds the maximum number of 24 races set out in the Concorde Agreement. Among others, historic and much-loved circuits such as that of Spa-Francorchamps and Monaco might have to make way, but Ricciardo hopes it will not come to that.

According to Motorsportweek.com he has nothing against new venues, but feels that some circuits are the "core" of the F1 calendar and they should never disappear according to the McLaren driver. "Monaco is such a circuit. It's a special weekend," explains the Australian.

"As an F1 driver, it's unique to go there and experience all the emotions that go with competing in Monaco. I would wish for the next generation to also be able to experience that," Ricciardo concludes.
