'Ricciardo's old qualities will hopefully be restored'

Former Red Bull Racing driver Daniel Ricciardo is having a hard time at his new team McLaren. The Australian is not yet achieving the results he would like. Helmut Marko believes that he should not give up.

During the Monaco GP, Ricciardo was lapped by teammate Lando Norris, who finished in third place. It was a painful result for the Australian, who won in Monaco back in 2018. Helmut Marko spoke to sport1.de: "I don't think he should give up." According to Marko, Ricciardo can make the same comeback as Sebastian Vettel, who finally picked up points in Monaco after a number of difficult races. "When everything is back to normal, the old qualities are restored. Hopefully that will happen with Ricciardo as well."

In an interview with L'Equipe, the McLaren driver talked about his last year at Red Bull. In the 2018 season, Ricciardo retired in eight races. "That was one of the worst years of my career. After my win in Monaco, I was on top of the world. Suddenly there was nothing. It was my last win, my last podium. I remember not wanting to go to the next race after Mexico. Of course I knew I would, but it gives you an idea of what I was going through at the time."

Ricciardo went on to talk about a meeting with former McLaren driver Carlos Sainz, during which the two talked about the car. "I ran into Carlos a while ago and he said, 'What do you think? Strange, isn't it?" The upcoming races will reveal whether Ricciardo can change his course and improve his form.
