Pirelli is in discussions with the FIA and teams about introducing more flexibility in tyre compound selection, including the possibility of skipping compounds to create more strategic variety and unpredictable race dynamics. While the concept may be evaluated in collaboration with the FIA and teams, current regulations do not permit such compound skipping. If approved in the future, it could add a new layer of strategic variation to race weekends.
This news comes after recent announcements of
new rules surrounding tyre selections in place at the upcoming Monaco Grand Prix.
Changes could create more entertaining races
Simone Berra of Pirelli has argued that this change could allow for "a show" to be put on as the company has already started testing this new theory. "We are doing simulations, let's say sharing results of the simulations and the things are under discussion."
The tyre company will need to finalise these results as it is not an easy decision that will be put in place quickly, with all 10 teams and the FIA having to be involved in the process.
The teams reactions
When asked by GPblog whether the teams were taking this news in a positive way, Berra expressed that this was the case "the approach is positive, let's say. We are all working in the same direction."
He added that discussions are still in the early stages, but the shared goal among Pirelli, the FIA, and the teams is to enhance racing through smarter and more flexible tyre strategies.
No tyre changes in the near future
Thus, it is unlikely that these changes could come into place in the immediate future, with Berra stating"I don't think it will happen before the middle of the season."
"I think it's most likely to be in case we decide to this second part of the season for sure we need to talk with the team."
