Lewis Hamilton has made his return to P1 for the first time since qualifying in Australia. His team-mate Valtteri Bottas put in a performance that enabled both Mercedes cars to finish in the top 3, whilst Kimi Raikkonen split the two.
The silver arrows never utilised the fastest tyre but Raikkonen set his fastest time on the ultra softs.
Despite making a trip into the gravel as a result of the early drizzle, Max Verstappen posted 22 laps finishing 5th, just below his Australian team-mate Daniel Ricciardo. It was a pleasing session for Red Bull having had a miserable Bahrain.
Both Haas drivers managed a top 10 finishing giving their garage another positive vibe. The Renault duo Carlos Sainz and Nico Hulkenberg finished 8th and 10th respectively.
Sebastian Vettel was the other car in the top 10 finishing 6th.
Gasly continued to please his Toro Rosso Honda team finishing 11th. He was 2 seconds behind leader Hamilton.
All drivers managed to complete a significant amount of laps which, if the forecast rain arrives this afternoon, will be ideal for all concerned.
