Lewis Hamilton has revealed that he carried an injury in silence for months and underwent the toughest training programme of his life over the winter break to ensure he was fully prepared for the new season.
Reflecting on how difficult it was to get through last season, when the expectations surrounding his first year with Ferrari clashed with a disappointing campaign on the results front, Hamilton admitted that the criticism and negativity had affected him at times.
The Briton explained that he eventually stepped away from that environment, instead focusing on the support of his family and close friends, before embarking on what he described as the most demanding winter training programme of his career. He also revealed that he had been carrying an injury for months after picking it up early last year.
"There’s moments where I see the stuff and for sure there’s moments where I allowed it to get to me and penetrate deeply. But then I went through a sequence of unplugging from that matrix. I spent lots of time with family, lots of time with friends, real people that know me, that have never doubted me, have stuck to and by me my whole life. And then I just went on the mission from Christmas Day. The training that I put in was harder than I’ve ever experienced, to keep myself in good shape, because I think at the beginning of last year I got injured here, actually, and carried that for months."

Hamilton explained that one of the biggest lessons he has learned throughout his career is never to doubt himself, regardless of the criticism or setbacks he faces. After a difficult period, he focused on rebuilding his confidence and mentality, gradually restoring the mindset that had brought him success in the past. The Briton admitted that standing on the podium as a Ferrari driver was an especially emotional moment, describing it as a source of immense pride and satisfaction.

"I know to never second-guess yourself, never doubt yourself. You’ve got to continue to believe in yourself at the core. And those are the things that I’ve managed to reimplement into my mentality. I’ve rebuilt my mind to this point, to get myself back to where I was. And it’s a great feeling to stand here, or to sit here right now, but to stand on that podium. I’m probably going to sleep in this red top tonight. It’s a good feeling to have the horse on there at top."

"DREAM THE IMPOSSIBLE. I can't begin to describe how amazing it feels to finally win in red. Grazie mille, @scuderiaferrari. For the hard work from everyone here today in Barcelona and back in Maranello. The passion and dedication to progress is paying off and this is only the beginning."
"To all the fans, this win is for you. I could not have made it to this moment without the support from you all. You've stuck by me. There have been dark times, times where the negativity won out and I felt useless and hope felt impossible. You all told me to remember. To remember to fight, to remember to keep going. To remember who I am. This win is just as much yours as it is mine. Thank you Team LH, thank you Tifosi. Let's keep it going."
