How Alonso warned of Bearman-style crash even before lights out at Suzuka

Fernando Alonso had already warned about the potential crash risks posed by the new regulations even before the start of the Japanese Grand Prix.
The massive incident involving Oliver Bearman, caused by a major overspeed between his Haas and Franco Colapinto’s car - which had suddenly run out of battery on the straight - sparked widespread debate after the race, with several drivers raising concerns over safety.
Speaking to DAZN shortly before the start, the Spaniard had warned that the speed differences between cars would lead more to position changes than proper racing, stressing that drivers would either get past or end up in an incident - exactly what ultimately happened to Bearman.
“The overtakes we see now are unintentional. Suddenly you find yourself with more battery than the car ahead and either you crash into them or you pass them. It’s more of an avoidance move than a proper overtake.”
“It’s not about taking a risk, braking later than someone, or trying something different through a corner - whether that’s around the outside or the inside. Now you either have less battery than your rivals or more battery, and you either overtake or get overtaken. So there’s no real variation in the racing.”

Bearman provides health update after 'freak incident' in Japanese GP

He explained that the crash was triggered by a massive overspeed of around 50 kph, something he sees as a direct consequence of the new regulations that drivers are still learning to manage. At the same time, he felt he was not given enough space considering the speed difference he was carrying.
Bearman also revealed that concerns over these large speed deltas had already been discussed with fellow drivers and stewards on Friday, stressing the need for greater awareness and adaptability in such situations. He added that the drivers had effectively warned the FIA about the risks, with the incident serving as a clear example of the dangers introduced by speed differences not previously seen in Formula 1.
