Horner wants to postpone the rule: 'I would prefer that'

Formula 1 is considering introducing a new fuel in 2022 to improve durability, but Mercedes and Red Bull Racing agree that the step needs to be much bigger.

Formula 1 currently uses fuels containing 5.75% biofuel. In 2021, with the new regulations, the F1 wanted an E10 fuel, 10% of which is biofuel. According to Christian Horner and Toto Wolff, however, this intermediate step, which is now planned for 2022, makes no sense.

''We are fairly neutral about whether or not to do E10, because we assume it's just a small step," says Wolff, according to Motorsport.com. The Austrian points to the small difference made by Formula 1, but with development costs. Horner argues for a different solution.

''My preference would be not to do the E10 fuel. It is yet another development for 2022. We would rather see a completely sustainable fuel when the new engine is introduced, rather than a small step of 5% with the E10 fuel. I don't know if that E10 really says anything, while a fully sustainable fuel in 2026 or maybe 2025 is a strong statement,'' concludes the team boss of Red Bull Racing.
