Former Ferrari boss and FIA president Jean Todt revealed he turned down an offer from Red Bull in the past. The Frenchman is still regarded as one of the most successful team principals in
Formula 1 history, as well as the architect behind Ferrari’s dominant run in the early 2000s, which saw Schumacher claim five consecutive titles between 2000 and 2004.
Todt then handed over the team principal role to Stefano Domenicali in 2008, remaining on as CEO before ultimately leaving Ferrari in 2009.
Speaking on the High Performance Podcast, the former FIA president recalled being personally approached by Red Bull founder Dietrich Mateschitz shortly after leaving Ferrari.
“When I left Ferrari, Dietrich Mateschitz wanted me to join Red Bull Racing. I said no, that chapter of my life was already closed. I had steered an iconic brand to success and felt I couldn’t top that achievement. I was ready to dedicate myself to new challenges.” History shows that Red Bull went on to enjoy huge success under Christian Horner, who from the following season launched a dominant run that delivered four consecutive drivers’ and constructors’ titles from 2010 to 2013.

He credited Horner for overseeing a period of sustained success and guiding Red Bull through multiple title-winning campaigns, helping establish the outfit as one of the benchmarks on the grid.
At the same time, he downplayed the importance of leadership style itself, arguing that different approaches can work equally well, both in Formula 1 and in other industries, as long as they deliver results. Instead, he stressed that the real priority for any leader should be the people within the organisation, creating an environment where individuals feel supported and are able to perform at their best.
