Ferrari has to work harder for 2021: "Other teams get an advantage through tokens"

In order to reduce costs for the teams as early as 2021, the FIA introduced a token system to ensure that development was limited for next season. However, a number of loopholes allow teams such as Racing Point and AlphaTauri to replace their gearbox and suspension without having to spend tokens.
According to Mattia Binotto, Ferrari's team boss, this will play a role in the battle for third place next season. "We have limits in our development for next season, because of that token system. With just two tokens we have to tackle this year's weaknesses in a way," Binotto explains to Motorsport.com.

Which teams benefit?

"There are teams that are currently not limited to those tokens. They have received free tokens, such as Racing Point and AlphaTauri. So they will have an advantage, a competitive advantage over us and the other teams around the development," Binotto expects. Not only are the free tokens an extra worry for Ferrari.
"McLaren will get upgrades next year as they change engine suppliers. Our competition will be very strong again next year. However, I am confident that we can also work hard here in Maranello."

Binotto recognises that steps need to be taken. "This team has always come second in the last five years, outside a third place in the championship. I don't think third place is completely impossible, it is our goal for next year," said Binotto.
