Ferrari had their worst F1 season since 1980 in 2020. So you could say that things can only get better in 2021, and according to Mattia Binotto, the team also owes it to their fans. They will have to overcome some obstacles.
"The minimum goal is a third place," Auto Motor und Sport quotes Binotto when they talk about next season at the factory in Maranello. "A team that in the hybrid era came in second four times and third a time and was able to compete with Mercedes for two seasons should be able to do the so."
Ferrari fell far back in 2020 It is widely believed that this is largely due to the new FIA guidelines on fuel supply. Directives that Ferrari, too, must now comply with. But according to Binotto, they have found their way back: "We assume that we no longer have the weakest engine."

Third place anything but certain

Although Ferrari is aiming for third place with these improvements, Binotto is already covering himself in case this does not work. "Racing Point and AlphaTauri have some free jokers thanks to their cooperation [with Mercedes and Red Bull] and McLaren will get a Mercedes engine. I expect even tougher opposition from these teams."
