Riccardo Patrese has admitted that the possibility of Max Verstappen walking away from Formula 1 cannot be ruled out, amid what he describes as the Dutch driver’s growing frustration with the current regulations. The six-time Grand Prix winner, assessing the situation surrounding Verstappen, suggested he expects the
Red Bull Racing driver could decide at the end of the season. Speaking to a gambling platform, Patrese stressed that enjoyment remains central to Verstappen’s approach to racing, adding that the current rules appear to be dampening that passion.
The former
Williams driver also pointed to Verstappen’s strong personality, suggesting the four-time world champion could ultimately choose to step away from
F1 if the regulatory situation does not improve.
“He is not feeling very happy. So, at the end of this season, he will probably make his move. Max, first of all, has to enjoy driving these cars. But it is obvious he doesn't like it at all. He’s a strong enough person that you believe him when he says, ‘If I don't have enjoyment, I'll leave Formula 1.’ He has already got satisfaction and achieved so much in the sport. He has proved that he's the best. If F1 changes and he has a good feeling again, then he will go on,” he said.
Patrese also suggested that a switch to another racing category remains a realistic option for Verstappen, especially given his interest in other forms of motorsport. “Otherwise, he may well change category. He really likes GT races. But at the end of it all, I think he is just talking. But he does need a winning car, that's for sure. He is fed up, that is for sure.”
While the
FIA continues to implement tweaks to the current regulations
, Verstappen, who has previously labelled them as fundamentally flawed, has not ruled out the possibility of stepping away from the sport. Following the Japanese Grand Prix, he revealed he would decide on his future in the coming weeks.
Verstappen urged against exiting F1
Earlier, Johnny
Herbert urged Verstappen against calling time on his Formula 1 career. The former British driver detailed how the Dutchman still boasts the wow factor, which remains capable of keeping several individuals on the edge of their seats.
Herbert stressed his belief that Verstappen would regret leaving the elite category of racing before concluding that he does not see such a scenario playing out, despite his frustration with the regulations.
