Charles Leclerc has topped the timing charts in the first practice session at the Hungarian GP, ahead of Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton.
Leclerc's lap time of 1:19.075 was enough to edge out Verstappen in the first of three practice sessions at the Hungaroring, located in the capital city Budapest.
Taking the lead early on was Verstappen, but the Red Bull driver had plenty to be frustrated about. The Dutchman will be investigated after the session for an incident involving former teammate Carlos Sainz, in which both drivers were noted for driving erratically by the stewards.
With just over ten minutes of FP1 underway, Verstappen then complained about his RB22, telling his race engineer Gianpiero 'GP' Lambiase on the radio: "Downshifts are horrendous, and the cars is jumping like crazy. I have really bad jumping on the front axle, like really bad."

By the halfway point, Ferrari's anticipated strength around the Hungaroring was on display - while Verstappen had momentarily had himself P1 after his first set of soft tyre running, Leclerc regained the lead by almost half a second with his 1:19.075. Hamilton, however, could only manage P3 after the soft tyre running.
With 25 minutes to go, however, the Red Flag was out. Lance Stroll's Aston Martin suffered a suspected rear left suspension failure on the exit of Turn 2, violently spinning the Canadian around and out of FP1. Thankfully, Stroll was unhurt, but that is just the start Aston Martin will not want in Budapest, after bringing a whopping 16 upgrades to the Hungaroring this weekend.
As for Mercedes, our championship leaders, George Russell could only finish P5, despite the Silver Arrows getting on top of the issues with his car that led to his Belgian GP DNF. Meanwhile, Mercedes' reserve driver Frederik Vesti, filling in for Kimi Antonelli in FP1, secured P7.
While Leclerc tops the first practice session, the Monegasque failed to finish it - limping back to the pits with just seven minutes to go with what has suspected to have been a gearbox issue.
