After heavy criticism of the Formula 1 regulations, drivers have indicated that the FIA is set to introduce a few adjustments ahead of the Miami Grand Prix. However, they are still not fully satisfied, as highlighted by an observation from Alexander Wurz. Wurz is the chairman of the Grand Prix Drivers’ Association (GPDA), the body that brings together all
F1 drivers to represent their interests. Safety remains one of its top priorities, and Oliver
Bearman’s crash in Japan has reportedly been a key topic of discussion within the drivers’ group chat.
Severe crash for Bearman
The Haas driver crashed heavily after being caught out by Franco Colapinto, who suddenly slowed ahead of him. The Argentine had run out of battery energy, resulting in a significant drop in performance. To avoid the Alpine driver, Bearman went onto the grass and subsequently lost control of his car.
In response, the FIA is introducing an adjustment aimed at preventing similar “superclipping” situations in the future.“We’re not there yet, but overall the changes are a step in the right direction,” says GPDA chairman and former Formula 1 driver Alex Wurz in the Austrian newspaper Krone.
Red Bull and McLaren want changes
The F1 drivers are well aware that engine hardware cannot be modified during the current season. However, some manufacturers are already targeting changes for next year’s regulations. For instance
, Red Bull Racing supports the idea of allowing certain engine components to be replaced or upgraded.
In doing so,
Max Verstappen’s team
aligns itself with McLaren team principal Andrea Stella, who is also a strong advocate for further adjustments. This is particularly noteworthy, given that Stella currently has access to the competitive Mercedes power units. Any changes to that engine could potentially reduce
McLaren’s current advantage and allow rivals to close the gap.
