It was a strong qualifying for Nyck de Vries in Australia, but the race at the Albert Park Circuit went pretty badly. De Vries had bad luck during the neutralisations and was eventually driven out of the race by Logan Sargeant.
De Vries therefore learned little from his race. According to the Dutchman, it was pure bad luck. In front of Viaplay's camera, he explained his race as follows: "The conclusion is simply that everything worked against us. We started on the hard tyres, ideally we could drive for a long time. [...] The red flag meant they could all go to the hard tyre and we actually did have to switch compounds."

De Vries in the corner where the blows fell

De Vries was aware at the time that it would be a long difficult race. After the touch with Esteban Ocon, in which De Vries came off the track with four wheels, there was damage to his front wing and there was nothing left to do. De Vries drove hopelessly behind and could not go in for repairs. Then he would end up in traffic from the leaders.
De Vries: "We were just in the corner where the blows were falling and in my opinion there wasn't much we could do about that. The strategy in itself was not wrong, but just worked out very badly because of that red flag." On the crash with Sargeant, the AlphaTauri driver is brief: "He drove it into the back of the car with me. I don't have much to add to that."
