Flavio Briatore has not been back as Alpine's team boss for too long, but he is already making his mark in many ways, with his latest in a bizarre moment during Friday's press conference at the Spanish Grand Prix.
During the press conference, Briatore, now leading the French team after the departure of Oliver Oakes, caused astonishment with an incomprehensible answer to a simple question, with Christian Horner unable to resist dryly chiming in.
The Italian is officially active as the executive advisor at Alpine, but he is practically the man at the helm since Oakes' departure. In Barcelona, he was asked whether he sees Pierre Gasly as a future Formula 1 world champion, but instead of a direct and succinct answer to a simple question, he spoke about the past of teams like McLaren, Renault, and Benetton.
Briatore rejoined the paddock in May 2024.

Horner humorously chimes in on Briatore

"I don't know," Briatore said when asked if he thinks Pierre Gasly can be a world champion with Alpine.
"We saw McLaren two, three years ago finishing at the bottom of the standings, Renault too, Benetton the same... and then we won the championship in 1995 and 1996.
"A few years ago, Red Bull was dominating completely; now, you have McLaren dominating completely. We are working, everybody is working hard. Everybody wants to be the best of the ten teams. If I believe in 2027 that we are not competing, I prefer staying on the beach and drinking Coca-Cola and not coming here with this warm weather in Barcelona," continued the Italian.
Briatore was then asked again whether he personally believes in Gasly as a leader or future F1 champion, but he continued to dodge the question.
"If you don't have the competitive car, it's very difficult to understand where we are with the driver. First, the driver needs the balance of the car, the car's competitiveness, and to feel strong in the car."
"It's very difficult to understand what level is, I guess, in this moment, if you don't give him the competitive car. Let's build the competitive car, and after we know where we are with the driver. I believe for everybody it's the same, you know," he continued.
After those undirected comments, Horner then took the floor and said with a laugh, "I have no idea what you're talking about, but all I want to do is say how refreshing it is to have Flav back. I mean, he had a bit of time out, but it is so much fun. These press conferences were so boring before you came back. Nothing changes!"
