The organisers for the
Australian Grand Prix have admitted the lack of overtaking was a major issue and will look to revert this in 2019.
Any kind of track changes in Melbourne will be tricky to make as it’s located in a public park but considerations are being made.
Just 5 overtakes were made in 58 laps. Nothing will be done on the cars until 2021 to make it easier for drivers.
Australian Grand Prix boss Andrew Westacott said: “I think the layout will be as it will be.
“But we are always open-minded to working with the FIA and
Formula 1 and if there are suggestions we will discuss and review them.
“We always do our due diligence and look at the pros and cons before we do them.”
When asked about changing turns 11/12 Westacott said “It was on the cutting room floor but it was one of the considerations and we haven’t looked at anything beyond that.
“Someone mentioned that Christian Horner made some comments but we are focussing on applauding the guys and girls who have committed themselves 100% to put on this event.”
More overtaking is something that will, for sure, make the sport more entertaining and the FIA thought the 3rd additional DRS Zone would help.
Further changes are going to be needed.
