Three Grand Prix weekends will be used in 2021 for the new format with a sprint race on Saturday. Silverstone has been chosen as the ideal test venue, according to British media, but Brazil, Canada and Italy are also on the list.

Silverstone ideal candidate

Since Liberty Media took over Formula 1, they have been looking for different ways to make the sport more interesting. Not every idea was successful, and not everyone is happy about their latest plans either. Formula 1 will organise three sprint races in 2021, which will determine the grid for Sunday's race.

The new Formula 1 format will be as follows. On Friday, there will be one practice session and then immediately a qualifying session. This qualification determines the order for the sprint race. The result of the sprint race on Saturday, will determine the starting grid for the race on Sunday. How long the sprint race will last and how many points will be distributed is unclear at this moment.

Sprint race for the public

What seems clear now is that the British Grand Prix has been chosen as a test location for this format. Formula 1 wants to test this format during three weekends and Stefano Domenicali has told Sportsmail told that Silverstone will be one of the three locations where the format will be tested. Brazil, Canada and Italy are the three candidates for the remaining two spots.

Besides the announcement of Silverstone Sportsmail also reports that the sprint race will last for half an hour and that they want to admit more than 100.000 fans on July 17 during the British Grand Prix. For that to happen however, the government in England will have to ease restrictions around the coronavirus.
