The engine regulations will be frozen from 2022, meaning Red Bull Racing and AlphaTauri will adopt the Honda technology. A brave step by the teams and a good one for Formula 1.

An important step for Formula 1

It has been in the air for a while, but today Red Bull and Honda come with clarity. The Austrian team will take over the Formula 1 project from Honda and will make the engines themselves from 2022. Because the regulations freeze, development costs will have to be incurred here.

This is a good step for Formula 1. The sport will operate with a budget cap from 2021 and because engine development is now being halted, the teams no longer have to spend money on it. This way, the teams can get used to the idea of a budget cap and are less likely to reach the limit in the first few years.

Mercedes dominance has been declining for years

The Mercedes power source has become less and less dominant in recent years. Honda and Renault, in particular, have come a lot closer in the past year. Ferrari even seemed to have the fastest engine in 2019, but after a scandal towards the end of the season and a few tweaks to the engine, much of that speed had suddenly disappeared.

In 2021, if Ferrari had everything back together and found its way back to the top, all the engines would be much closer together and aerodynamics would prevail over the performance of the car. A good thing for Formula 1, because with the new aero regulations that will come into effect in 2022, the cars should already be much closer together. The freeze on engine development will only help with this.

From 2022, Formula 1 could just become more spectacular than ever. The entire field will be overhauled, there will be more remarkable races and it will be an old-fashioned feast for the fans.
