There have been stories about a possible Grand Prix in Madrid for a while now. Currently, the Spanish Grand Prix is held in Barcelona. Consequently, the organisers of the event at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya have just plans to keep the race on the calendar for a while longer.

The Barcelona circuit is a familiar one for all drivers. Before the coronavirus outbreak, pre-season tests were always held in Catalonia. Last year was the last time this was done, alternating with Bahrain. It is also the circuit where Max Verstappen took his first Formula 1 victory in 2016.

Longer stay GP Barcelona in F1?

Last week, the director of events at the IFEMA fair - where the Madrid Grand Prix will take place - announced that it will be signed. However, this does not mean that there will definitely be no more Barcelona Grand Prix. Indeed, Marca reports that Josep Lluis Santamariia, the director of the Barcelona circuit, wants to extend the contract by 10 years, until 2036 (the current contract is until 2026). What the options are is still unknown: could there be a second Grand Prix in Spain, or will the Spanish Grand Prix be held only in Madrid?
