De Vries soon eliminated in Bahrain: 'Coincidence of circumstances'

Nyck de Vries did not survive Q1 during qualifying for the Bahrain Grand Prix. The Dutchman drove the slowest time of all, although he is still lucky that Pierre Gasly 's time was taken away after exceeding track limits. The AlphaTauri driver will start penultimate on Sunday.

De Vries did not quite manage to string the laps together at the Bahrain International Circuit and was ultimately seven tenths slower than teammate Yuki Tsunoda.

De Vries had hoped for more

The 28-year-old driver is dissatisfied with his qualifying. "No, of course not. The goal is always to qualify as far up front as possible. In itself, I was pretty okay with my first two runs. In my last run, I couldn't make the move. I lost the back end coming out of Turn 1. My tyres weren't warm enough either and in the end we weren't fast enough to qualify better [than this]."

Where it went wrong? "It's a confluence of circumstances. I made a small mistake here and there every run. The second run was the most complete and in the latter I was behind from Turn 1." The Sneek-based driver hopes he can play a more significant role in his AT04 tomorrow. "I think the longruns were relatively slightly better than the pace in our short runs. We are going to make the most of it."
