Red Bull Racing struggled with reliability problems at the beginning of the season, but those seem to be a thing of the past. However, the car of Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez is still too heavy. The engineers of the Austrian team are busy cutting away the excess weight.

Eight kilos too much

The Red Bull is still about eight kilos above the minimum weight, although that also depends on the setup of the car. The Ferrari would be around the minimum weight of 798 kilos. It is very simple: the more ballast you have to move, the slower you become. The German Auto, Motor und Sport has calculated that Red Bull can still gain 0.25 seconds if the last eight kilos can also be removed from the car.

Unlike competitor Ferrari, Red Bull has no worries about the power unit. According to Helmut Marko, the Honda power unit ran like clockwork for the first seven races and the six-cylinder turbo hardly shows any signs of use. Engines would also remain at a consistently high level throughout its life.

DRS the problem child

However, Red Bull continues to struggle with the DRS system. There is too much pressure on the opening mechanism. As a result, Verstappen had to sit idly by in Barcelona and watch as the system sometimes opened and usually did not. It made it a frustrating race for the Dutchman for a long time, although he managed to return home with the victory after the retirement of Charles Leclerc.
