Fernando Alonso is considering retiring from Formula 1 for good after the current season and making a switch to the World Endurance Championship (WEC), GPblog understands. In that case, the now 45-year-old driver would race with the Aston Martin hypercar.
For months, Alonso has been keeping Formula 1 and all its followers in suspense: will the Spaniard drive for Aston Martin in the pinnacle of motorsport in 2027 as well? In the F1 paddock, there is still a belief that Alonso will add a 24th year, although the two-time world champion refuses to give a definitive “yes.”
In the meantime, GPblog understands that Alonso is considering a move to the WEC, where he already captured the world title with Toyota in the 2018–2019 season. With the Japanese team, the Spaniard also won the 24 Hours of Le Mans twice. If he embarks on a new WEC adventure, he would choose the Aston Martin team, which is naturally linked to the F1 outfit.
The British WEC team currently has Harry Tincknell, Tom Gamble, Ross Gunn, Alex Riberas, Marco Sørensen and Roman De Angelis as full-time drivers in the premier hypercar class. With them behind the wheel, Aston Martin sits sixth in the constructors’ championship (out of the eight participating manufacturers). The expectation is that most of the aforementioned drivers will also compete for Aston Martin in the WEC in 2027.

A difficult F1 season for Alonso

Alonso is currently experiencing a particularly challenging season in Formula 1. After fourteen Grands Prix, the two-time world champion is in nineteenth place in the championship with just three points. He managed to score points only in Monaco (tenth) and Zandvoort (ninth).
Moreover, Alonso has retired from five races already. Even after the updates to the AMR26, Aston Martin is struggling to close the gap to the midfield and sits near the bottom of the constructors’ standings with only three points.
