Marc Marquez’s quest for his tenth motorcycling world title could get another huge boost with Jorge Martin considering surgery.
Martin is the Spaniard’s main rival at the top of the standings, level on 274 points, but Marquez tops the championship due to his number of wins.
Last time out in Misano, Martin took an early lead on what has been a dominant Aprilia, but he was overtaken by Marquez and then fell further and further back to fifth.
As such, Marquez was able to overturn a 102-point deficit from earlier in the season to take control of what would be his eighth MotoGP title and tenth overall.

Martin reveals surgery is now under consideration
There was then more good news for the 33-year-old, with Martin admitting he may have to undergo surgery.
Speaking to Sky Italia, he said: "It's a shame I had this problem today. I started really well, but then I couldn't feel the brakes anymore.
“I couldn't do anything; I started lapping in the high 1'32s, I didn't have control of the bike.
“I'm disappointed because the bike was working really well and I felt good. I was there to win today; I didn't want anything else.”
Asked about surgery, he added: “I don't know. We don't have time to do anything for Austria. I don't think it will be a problem there; then we'll decide with the team what to do.

“There are only a few races left, but many are consecutive; I honestly don't know what's best. The important thing is to think carefully because these things can get worse.”
Marquez could benefit from crucial MotoGP title setback
As Martin points out, avoiding surgery before Austria would make sense, with the Grand Prix this weekend, from September 18 to 20.
There is then a weekend off before the Japanese Grand Prix from October 2 to 4.
The news is still a huge boost for Marquez, with Martin being his main rival for the title. His countryman is the only previous champion in the running, having won his maiden premier-class crown in 2024.

Injuries continue to reshape MotoGP championship fight
The 28-year-old Aprilia rider has also been one of the most consistent point scorers this season, having retired from just one race, with Marquez having missed four Grand Prix.
Third-placed Marco Bezzecchi has now failed to score in five races, including at Misano, where he crashed out of the lead.
Injuries have played a huge part in the title fight, with Trackhouse’s Ai Ogura missing the last two race weekends with a hand injury.
Like Martin, he was one of the most crash-resistant competitors and had climbed up to second in the championship, but he’s now dropped to seventh ahead of a potential return in Austria.
