Entering the weekend, every team except Alpine brought updates to the final Formula 1 race weekend before the summer break. Red Bull Racing and Ferrari introduced changes to their 'Macarena' rear wings, while McLaren and Mercedes also brought a range of updates to the Hungaroring.

Entering this weekend, Kimi Antonelli leads the drivers' standings. The young Italian holds a 45-point advantage over Lewis Hamilton and a 50-point lead over George Russell following his victory at the Belgian Grand Prix. That means he will definitely lead the standings heading into the summer break this year.

In the first session, Charles Leclerc set the pace for Ferrari on both the medium and soft tyres. However, in the closing minutes, his car came to a halt in the pit lane after the Monegasque reported over the team radio that something had broken. Despite the issue, he still finished more than half a second clear of Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen, and a full second ahead of Isack Hadjar and George Russell. Antonelli did not take part in the session, having handed his car over to Frederik Vesti.

According to the defending world champion, drivers can still make a difference this year. He told GPblog, among others: "You certainly can [make the difference], yeah. I mean, there's obviously some corners get a little bit more eliminated.
