Daniel Juncadella is grateful that Max Verstappen is boosting interest in endurance racing. His Spanish teammate at Verstappen Racing says in the lead-up to the 24 Hours of Nürburgring: “People now realize: ‘That’s also fun to watch.’” The 24 Hours of Nürburgring is the first, but undoubtedly not the last endurance race in which Max Verstappen will compete. In Australia, there is already fervent hope for the Dutchman’s participation in the Bathurst 1000. The event is even getting a different date to make Verstappen’s arrival possible.
The World Endurance Championship (WEC) would surely also love to have Verstappen in their ranks, for example during the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the showpiece of that series. It’s no secret that every team in the hypercar class would like to entice Verstappen to
make the (temporary) switch at some point.

“Everyone wants something from Max,” says Daniel Juncadella, one of Verstappen’s teammates, during an exclusive conversation with
GPblog. The Spaniard himself competes in the WEC alongside his duties at Verstappen Racing. Still, his WEC team Genesis has (so far) not asked him to put out feelers to the former
F1 champion.
“We should leave him alone. I think he will continue with endurance races. I don’t think anyone is trying to convince him. I think everyone understands that he draws a lot of attention to the Nürburgring. He ensures that this attention trickles down to all endurance racing.”
“And of course, if someone like Max keeps doing endurance races, there will one day be renewed interest in him. Just as he enjoys the Nürburgring and was interested in racing there, I think the same applies to races in Imola, Spa, and Le Mans [in the WEC].”

The Nürburgring is completely sold out this weekend. That’s the Max effect, which also shines a light on the other drivers. “This is incredibly good for everyone,” Juncadella continues. “It’s simply that the attention for endurance racing will only keep growing. It’s great that he’s doing this.”
“We should all actually be very grateful to him for joining us and increasing the attention for endurance racing. People now realize: ‘Okay, he’s racing there too, that’s interesting as well.’”
