Lewis Hamilton backed up Ferrari's strong pace from the opening practice session by topping the timesheets in FP2 at the Hungarian Grand Prix, leading a Ferrari one-two ahead of teammate Charles Leclerc. How did FP2 unfold at Hungaroring?
FP2 began with Aston Martin forced onto the back foot, as
Lance Stroll was ruled out of the session after the team failed to repair his AMR26 in time following a rear-suspension failure in the opening practice.
The opening half of the session was dominated by Ferrari, with both Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton setting the pace on the medium compound and opening up a sizeable gap over the rest of the field. The Scuderia looked immediately at ease around the
Hungaroring, comfortably outpacing their rivals during the early long-run phase.
As the frontrunners switched to the soft compound for their qualifying simulation runs, the session was briefly interrupted by Franco Colapinto. The Alpine driver lost control of his car through the final corner before crashing into the barriers, heavily damaging the rear of the car, including the rear wing. Unable to continue, Colapinto climbed out of the cockpit, bringing his session to a premature end.
After several minutes of interruption while Colapinto's stricken Alpine was recovered and the track was cleared, the session resumed with just under 25 minutes remaining on the clock. Drivers quickly returned to the circuit to complete their qualifying simulations before turning their attention to longer race runs.
Charles Leclerc reclaimed the top spot as soon as he bolted on the soft tyres, setting a benchmark of 1:18.877. Moments later, teammate Lewis Hamilton completed a Ferrari one-two, finishing just 0.037s adrift. The Scuderia pair were the only drivers to break into the 1:18s, underlining Ferrari's impressive pace around the Hungaroring.
Shortly afterwards, Hamilton improved once again, lowering the benchmark to a 1:18.729 to move 0.148s clear of his teammate. Lando Norris finished third, but the McLaren driver was already more than half a second off the Ferrari driver's pace. Below are the full results.
