Following the Monaco Grand Prix, Alpine filed a right of review regarding the penalties for Pierre Gasly, which cost the Frenchman his podium. The stewards acknowledge that the French team has provided new, relevant evidence. Eight other teams were present at the hearing, including Red Bull Racing
The governing body reports that the hearing took place on June 11 at 13:00, and representatives from eight other Formula 1 teams wished to attend. Red Bull is on that list, along with McLaren, Racing Bulls, Ferrari, Aston Martin, Haas, Audi, and Cadillac. The French team had submitted two requests for review in response to the decisions made during the Monaco race weekend. Gasly received penalties for exceeding the pit lane speed limit.

Alpine presents new evidence

The crux of the matter revolves around information that only became available after the race. According to FOM, Formula 1’s official timekeeper, it has emerged that the distance used to calculate Gasly’s speed in the pit lane may not have been correct. As a result, the Alpine driver’s speed may have been overestimated. The stewards ruled that this evidence is both significant and relevant, and that it was not available at the time of the original decisions. This does not automatically nullify the penalties, but it does mean that Alpine meets the conditions for an official review procedure.

In their decision, the stewards confirm that both of Alpine’s requests are admissible. They also determine that there is indeed a new element that could potentially influence the original rulings. During the procedure, Alpine presented several arguments, including telemetry data indicating that Gasly activated his pit lane limiter in time. A statement from the Frenchman himself was also submitted.
Ultimately, however, it was primarily the information from FOM about the potentially incorrect distance measurement that proved decisive for the stewards to reopen the case.

Second hearing to follow

For now, the stewards have ruled that there is sufficient reason to re-examine the earlier decision. During the second part of the hearing, it will be assessed whether the penalties should indeed be upheld or whether they should still be withdrawn. For the time being, Alpine does not yet have a definitive victory, but the team has succeeded in getting the Monaco case back on the table. It is therefore possible that the result of the Monaco Grand Prix will still be overturned a week later. It is also worth noting that teams have 96 hours to appeal a post-race penalty, meaning they can still lodge an appeal until Thursday afternoon.
