During the first free practice session of the Sao Paulo Grand Prix weekend, Colton Herta completed more than 100 kilometres. This means he has now earned enough points over the three-year period to secure an FIA Super Licence.
Herta has already participated in five FP1 sessions this year, but he was unable to complete enough laps during the first 60 minutes of the Italian Grand Prix weekend, meaning he did not earn a point for that session.
After some confusion surrounding Herta's points tally following the Mexico City Grand Prix, which also involved a phone call from GPblog, the American needed one more outing to earn the final point required for his FIA Super Licence. He drove Sergio Perez's car on Friday in Brazil.
As the circuit in Sao Paulo is 4.309 kilometres long, the former IndyCar driver had to complete at least 24 full laps to meet the requirement. Herta completed 31 laps in total. With this final point, the American has reached 40 points, the minimum required to obtain an FIA Super Licence.
