The Moto2 title contenders were separated by one-hundredth of a second ahead of another thrilling showdown at the Qatar Grand Prix.
Izan Guevara, who trails championship leader Manu Gonzalez by 3.5 points, was just ahead of him, taking third in practice.
Ahead of them was future MotoGP rider Dani Holgado, who set a new Moto2 lap record time of 1:55.89, and he was followed by Filip Salac.
Holgado is out of the championship fight, 86.5 points back in fifth, but has regained some form ahead of his winter promotion to Gresini.
His Aspar teammate David Alonso, who is also heading to the premier class next year, was down in seventh, but won last time out in Malaysia.

Ahead of him in sixth was Senna Agius, the fourth rider on this year's Moto2 grid who will be heading to MotoGP next year.
Championship leader Gonzalez perhaps surprisingly isn't, but his chances of proving MotoGP teams wrong could take a knock should future Pramac Yamaha rider Guevara finally wrestle top spot off him in the standings.
