Lando Norris set the quickest time in FP1 ahead of this weekend's Brazilian Grand Prix setting a time which was 0.082 seconds quicker than Kimi Antonelli who finished second.
It was a promising first session for McLaren who have brought upgrades to Interlagos, as they look for a return to form after slipping down the competitive order in recent races.
Max Verstappen finished third for Red Bull, ahead of Lewis Hamilton's Ferrari and George Russell's Mercedes - the latter of which will serve a five-place grid penalty this weekend.
Gabriele Mini was the quickest of the six rookie drivers in P7, ahead of his teammate for the session Franco Colapinto. Rafael Camara was P18 for Haas in his first full F1 weekend.
Four-time world champion Verstappen was not happy with his Red Bull, as he exclaimed 'what the f***' as he complained about the downshifts in his car. Though that was just moments before he set a time of 1:11.953 on the soft tyres which put him over eight tenths up on Antonelli at the halfway stage of the session.

However, the Dutchman could not hold onto top spot as Antonelli went a fraction quicker before Lando Norris jumped to the top of the timesheets with a 1:11.717.
There was a blow for Freddie Slater who lasted just 12 minutes in his second outing in the Audi before his car broke down bringing out the red flag temporarily. Also stopping out on track was the Williams of Alex Albon who reported a loss of power steering before he pulled his Williams off the circuit.
