F1 confirms: Chinese Grand Prix cancelled for fourth year in a row

Formula 1 has confirmed that the Chinese Grand Prix will not take place in 2023. Other circuits are currently being considered to take China's place.

Corona rules are still very strict in China, preventing Formula 1 from heading to the country for a Grand Prix for the fourth year in a row. Alternatives are currently being considered, but a final decision is not expected for a few weeks.

The last race in China took place in 2019 before the Covid pandemic. The race was due to take place next season on 16 April, but it was always to be seen whether the restrictions would be lifted in time for F1. In a statement, the F1 organisation revealed that a replacement is being sought.

"Formula 1 can confirm, following dialogue with the promoter and relevant authorities, that the 2023 Chinese Grand Prix will not take place due to the ongoing difficulties presented by the COVID-19 situation. Formula 1 is assessing alternative options to replace the slot on the 2023 calendar and will provide an update on this in due course", the statement reads.

The cancellation of China creates a four-week gap between the Australian Grand Prix and the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. So F1 will be only too happy to find a replacement for the cancelled race. The sport still wants to maintain a calendar with a record 24 races.
