Charles Leclerc has been fined €200 by the FIA after exceeding the pit lane speed limit at the sole Free Practice session of the Miami GP. Drivers are limited to just 80km\h in the pit lane, with the Monegasque driver getting caught at 81 by the stewards. The fine is a small blemish on what was a promising practice session for Leclerc in Miami. The
Ferrari driver set the pace on both hard and soft tyres at the Hard Rock stadium, ultimately topping the timing charts with a 1:29.310.
As the frontrunners switched to soft tyres for a qualifying run in the final 15 minutes of practice, Leclerc was three tenths quicker than Red Bull's Max Verstappen in second place. Lando Norris looked promising but found himself in traffic, while Kimi Antonelli was unable to set a lap time on the softs due to a power unit issue Mercedes could not fix in time before the finish.
The FIA have confirmed that Leclerc's pace in the pit lane was specifically, 81.4km/h, just over one km/h over the limit - the subsequent punishment will not affect the rest of the 28-year-old's weekend as he receives just a €200 fine.
The governing body's decision and reasoning read:
"Decision: The competitor (Scuderia Ferrari HP) is fined €200.
Reason: Car 16 exceeded the pit lane speed limit which is set at 80 km/h for this event by 1.4km/h."
