Williams will miss the first days of testing in Barcelona due to an unspecified issue. What could be going on? And why didn’t they opt to test with a suboptimal Formula 1 car? What is going on at Williams?
The exact cause of the delay remains unclear. Unconfirmed reports mention failing the mandatory crash test, or the British team itself possibly identified a structural issue with the car.
In either case, a redesign of one or more components is likely needed. In modern
Formula 1, that usually isn’t resolved overnight. Manufacturing a component can take weeks.
Skipping the entire five-day test in Barcelona is a sign this wasn’t about a loose bolt here and there. This was a significant problem.
Williams won’t be rushed
Given the circumstances,
Williams appears to be following a smart strategy: not rushing things now instead of completing laps in Barcelona with a compromised car that would yield little value.
The key is to remain calm and continue working on the new car at the factory, on the computer, and in the simulator. In the virtual world, implementing iterative updates is faster, easier, and more measurable. That would never have been achievable in Spain.
In any case,
Williams believes there is enough time to be ready for the next test in Bahrain.
The team of Alexander Albon and Carlos Sainz will start the season on the back foot, because their rivals will have gathered valuable real-world data.
Williams actually started preparations early
In fact,
Williams was the first team last year to begin preparations for 2026, which meant development of the 2025 car stopped early. With so much time, you’d think there would be ample opportunity to tackle any issues early.
Evidently,
Williams hasn’t managed to do that. All in all, this indicates the new technical regulations are indeed particularly complex. It was to be expected that at least one team would stumble over the rules. That it has happened to Williams is especially tough for the team given its recent history.
