F1 Today | Robin Raikkonen enters Red Bull ranks as Verstappen confirms Mercedes and McLaren talks

Robin Raikkonen has taken an important step in his young career after officially signing with the Red Bull Junior Team. The son of 2007 Formula 1 world champion Kimi Räikkönen will enter the Austrian outfit's development programme in 2027, having already established himself as a promising name in karting. The young Finn has competed at both national and international level in Rotax and WSK championships, collecting significant results along the way. His arrival sees another Räikkönen name move closer to the Formula 1 ladder, this time with a programme that has played a key role in the careers of Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen.

Red Bull has nevertheless made clear that Raikkonen's development will be handled with patience rather than allowing the attention surrounding his surname to create unnecessary pressure. Laurent Mekies pointed to his speed, racecraft and natural talent as qualities that have already stood out, alongside the maturity and calm approach he has shown at a young age. The focus from 2027 will therefore be on allowing him to progress step by step, with Red Bull providing the support, resources and environment required to continue his development without rushing the process.

A move away from Red Bull was a genuine possibility for Verstappen, with the Dutchman revealing that he explored alternatives before ultimately deciding that his future remained with his current team.

Mercedes was one of the options on the table last year, when Verstappen was repeatedly linked with the German outfit. McLaren then entered the picture this season, with the four-time world champion confirming that discussions also took place with the Woking-based team.

Verstappen did not dismiss either approach and instead treated the conversations seriously. He viewed such discussions as a normal opportunity to assess his options, while stressing that the exchanges with both teams remained respectful throughout.

Neither possibility ultimately convinced Verstappen to bring his Red Bull spell to an end. After considering the alternatives, he concluded that staying where he was represented the right choice for him, preferring to follow his own instincts rather than leave simply to pursue success elsewhere.

That decision also reflects the approach Verstappen took earlier in his career. The Dutchman believes he could have walked away from Red Bull much sooner and attempted to win with another team, but chose to remain patient instead. That patience eventually brought success, and Verstappen now sees similarities between that period and his current situation as he once again commits to Red Bull.
