Colapinto unable to hold back tears after costly Monza mistake

While Pierre Gasly produced something remarkable on Saturday by securing an unexpected pole position, the Argentine was equally impressive in the opening stages of the race at Monza. Colapinto made a brilliant re-start to immediately put himself in contention for a podium finish, only for a mistake at Lesmo to send him into the gravel and cost him significant ground.

Despite dropping as far back as 16th place, Colapinto refused to give up and gradually fought his way back through the field, eventually crossing the line in ninth. His Alpine teammate finished two positions further ahead in seventh.

Speaking to ESPN Argentina after the race, Colapinto struggled to hide his disappointment as he reflected on the opportunity that had slipped away. The Argentine became visibly emotional and was eventually unable to hold back his tears, fully aware that his early mistake had prevented him from making the most of what could have been an even stronger result.

"It was a tough race, very frustrating." he said. "I think I had a great opportunity and I didn't take advantage of it, so I'm sad, sad about that. I think it could have been a great race, but I made a big mistake. A very important opportunity for the team and for myself was missed, so I'm a little sad. I just have to learn from this."

Speaking later to GPblog, among other media, the Argentine went into greater detail about the mistake that derailed his race. Colapinto explained that he suddenly lost control of the car through Turns 5 and 6 without immediately understanding why, sending him at high speed through the gravel and causing significant damage.

He initially feared his race was over, but Alpine managed to adjust the car using the available settings, opting for a slightly more conservative and draggy configuration. Colapinto was ultimately able to continue and recover into the points, although the result did little to ease his frustration after believing a double podium for Alpine could have been possible.
