Charles Leclerc took the win for Ferrari as George Russell and Lewis Hamilton completed the podium at the British GP. He are five talking points from the race at Silverstone. Leclerc’s victory was a huge boost
With questions about suffering at the hands of his teammate, struggling with his brakes and whether he’d lost his edge, this win for Leclerc provides a timely boost.
He was quick all weekend and may have pulled himself back into the title race. His relief at crossing the line was understandable after a difficult start to the season.
Leclerc confirmed he has been working hard on making improvements and resetting after seeing Hamilton win in Barcelona.
Russell’s relief
Rather like Leclerc, Russell’s podium was a welcome one to help turn the tide on his teammate.
With
Kimi Antonelli’s failure to score points, Russell can take comfort from his first Silverstone podium.
He said: “I got very lucky with the safety car, the fans would have been excited because my tyres were stone cold.”
For someone who has been cursing his bad luck, this was payback.
Safety Car end takes away the excitement
The race finished behind the safety car following Verstappen’s crash, denying a capacity crowd a grandstand finish.
Russell was a sitting duck on old tyres but with no restart, Lewis Hamilton never got the opportunity to pounce.
Antonelli frustration and passion for points
It was heartbreaking to see Antonelli struggle with a technical problem after running for much of the race in the podium places, but his desire to keep fighting for points should be applauded.
He ended up picking up a time penalty for exceeding track limits but his passionate plea over the team’s radio to keep going - despite the significant performance problem with his Mercedes - was endearing.
Mercedes will probably take a dim view of him not following team instructions but the flip side is it shows passion and he knows points all add up come the end of the season.
Verstappen questions intensify
Another race where the Dutchman fails to finish and that will only serve to ramp up the pressure on Red Bull and their attempts to persuade him to stay.
Verstappen won’t be happy. Neither with his father Jos, and more importantly the DNF opens up the potential for him to trigger an exit clause in his contract.
This was just another miserable weekend for Verstappen in what is becoming a frequent occurrence.
