Verstappen

The Verstappen family has become a household name in Formula 1 over the years. Not only do Max and Jos Verstappen regularly attract media attention, but other family members also frequently appear in the paddock.

Max Verstappen began his F1 career in 2015 with Toro Rosso as a major talent, making the jump to sister team Red Bull Racing just a year later. That move proved to be golden for the Austrian outfit, as he quickly outperformed teammate Daniel Ricciardo. In his early seasons, he couldn’t yet compete with the dominant Mercedes team, but that changed in 2021. Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton battled throughout the year for the championship, with a dramatic finale in Abu Dhabi. The Dutchman clinched his first world title and followed it up with another in 2022. In 2023, Verstappen and Red Bull Racing shattered records by winning 19 of the 22 Grands Prix, making him the most dominant F1 driver in a single season and earning him a third title. The 2024 season proved more challenging, but Verstappen still managed to secure his fifth consecutive world championship, although Red Bull had to concede the constructors' title to McLaren.

His father, Jos Verstappen, entered Formula 1 in the 1990s. He made his debut with Benetton in 1994 and competed in the sport until 2003. He raced for several teams including Simtek, Footwork, Tyrrell, Stewart, Arrows, and Minardi. His best season came in 1994, and until his son’s rise, Jos was the most successful Dutch F1 driver with two podium finishes and 17 career points. After leaving Formula 1, Jos remained in the spotlight. In 2022, he took up rallying—something he proved quite good at and continues to pursue. He is also regularly seen in the Red Bull pit box supporting his son Max.

Until 2008, Jos Verstappen was married to Belgian Sophie Kumpen, Max’s mother. Kumpen was a successful kart and race driver, competing in Formula A, Formula K, and the Super A class. She raced against future F1 drivers like Jenson Button, Nick Heidfeld, Jarno Trulli, and Giancarlo Fisichella. Kumpen ended her racing career in 1996 to raise her two children and support Jos in his Formula 1 journey.

The late Frans Verstappen, Jos’s father, supported his grandson Max for many years. Each race weekend, he brought people together at Café Housmans in Montfort to watch and cheer on the Red Bull Racing driver.

Victoria Verstappen is Max’s younger sister and the daughter of Jos and Sophie. She is very active on Instagram and, together with Tom Heuts, has two sons and a daughter: Luka, Lio, and Hailey. Although several family members have a passion for racing, Victoria does not have a background in motorsport.
