Bearman crash raises questions as FIA opts against immediate changes

The FIA’s decision not to even investigate Franco Colapinto for his role in Oliver Bearman’s crash is not just questionable — it’s difficult to justify.
Yes, the broader context matters. What happened was, to a degree, inevitable. These regulations have created massive speed differentials between cars on different phases of their lap, and the result of an inevitable scenario these new regulations were always going to produce.
But “inevitable” does not mean “unavoidable.”
We had already seen a near-identical moment earlier in the race. When George Russell slowed abruptly at the same section of track, Charles Leclerc navigated the situation safely. The reason was simple: Russell behaved predictably. He held his line. He didn’t panic.
Colapinto did the opposite. After effectively stalling on the straight, he made a sudden and aggressive move to the left — a reaction that was as unnecessary as it was dangerous. In doing so, he eliminated any escape route for Bearman, forcing him onto the grass at high speed and leaving him completely powerless before the inevitable impact.

At that point, Bearman was no longer driving — he was a passenger.

Taking into account the shared responsibility, with the regulations playing their part, the FIA may have opted not to add further fuel to the fire by clearing Colapinto. Even so, the move itself arguably warranted closer scrutiny - if not a penalty, potentially even a significant one.
The FIA may argue that the circumstances were complex, that the regulations contributed, and that assigning blame would only inflame an already sensitive issue. But that’s exactly why incidents like this must be examined, not ignored.
Because regardless of the regulatory context, driver responsibility still matters. And this was, at the very least, a moment that deserved scrutiny.

Fernando Alonso had already warned of such an incident even before the race got underway, and fate had it that Suzuka became the stage for this frightening crash, with the Japanese circuit unfortunately already known for past dramatic accidents.
This time, the outcome was a fortunate one, but the lesson must be learned not only by the FIA, but also by those out on track in this case.

Colapinto unpacks 'really odd' situation

Speaking after the race, Colapinto admitted he was left puzzled by how the incident unfolded, pointing to the massive speed delta between the two cars. He explained that it almost felt like one driver was on an out lap while the other was pushing flat-out, highlighting just how unusual the situation was in a corner normally taken at full throttle.
Colapinto also stressed how tricky and potentially dangerous those moments become, especially when the cars are not travelling in a straight line but still carrying high speed through slight changes of direction.
He recalled seeing Bearman lose control in his mirrors, yet still carrying enough speed to come past him even while spinning, underlining the scale of the difference. While he acknowledged how risky the situation can be, he was relieved to see Bearman out of the car and back in the paddock without consequences.
