ex-F1 driver and manager to Oscar Piastri, Mark Webber, has draw a comparison between Piastri and seven-time world champion, Lewis Hamilton, ahead of the final three Grands Prix in 2025, where Piastri looks to challenge Norris for the title. It's a journey for him, obviously an incredible journey, so early in his career.
- Mark Webber to Channel 4With just three Grands Prix and one sprint race remaining in the 2025
F1 season, Piastri currently sits 24-points behind championship leader and team-mate at McLaren, Lando Norris. The Australian was leading the championship earlier on this season, but since returning from the summer break, the 23-year old has taken just one victory at the Dutch Grand Prix back in August, and subsequently has lost the lead.
However, manager Mark Webber has backed Piastri, saying: "To fight for a world title year three is pretty unprecedented. I think it was Lewis There hasn't been many people that have done this so early in his career."
Piastri has seemingly grown into the sport rapidly, with the Australian making his debut back in 2023, taking his first sprint race win in his rookie season and then going on to take a maiden F1 victory at the 2024 Hungarian Grand Prix. Just one season later at the 2025 Hungarian Grand Prix, Piastri was leading the world championship.
Webber continued: "So naturally, that's in the equation, of course, to understand the boundaries of how that can look for him, without putting too much pressure on the situation. So a bit of everything, arm around him, a bit of encouragement here and there, opportunities. You can see his pecker is up. He's still working hard, and it's early in his career."
Webber himself fought for a world championship back in 2010 with Red Bull, against Sebastian Vettel, Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton. Just fifteen years later, the Australian is back in the same position, but this time as a manager.
Webber added: "I think it was, believe it or not, nearly easier when I was in the car, because obviously, you're across everything. You've got more control over what can happen. I was a bit older in my career, so it was a different part of our trajectory and journey, if you like."
With three Grands Prix remaining, Piastri needs to outscore Norris by eight points at every race, and beat Norris in the Qatar sprint race, in order to win the championship. Max Verstappen is also just 25-points down on Piastri, and has claimed that he has
'nothing to lose' ahead of the Las Vegas GP.Webber concluded by saying: "But to see him so young, year three, fighting for a world title quite quickly, it's pretty surreal and bizarre. But nice to be involved in, because a lot of drivers don't fight for a title once in their career. So it's sort of like you've got to try and find the positives, but also you want to, of course, win."
Piastri sits 24-points behind Norris ahead of the Las Vegas GP, the first race in the upcoming triple header to conclude the 2025 championship.
