The Italian Union of Automotive Journalists (UIGA) has urged the FIA to take action against Max Verstappen following what happened during a media session at Suzuka.
The verbal clash between the four-time world champion and a The Guardian journalist on the eve of the Suzuka weekend caused quite a stir, with the Dutchman deliberately refusing to begin his media session until the reporter had left the room.
The situation then escalated into a heated exchange, during which Verstappen repeatedly told him to “get out”, making it clear that his stance stemmed from an incident dating back to a question asked after last year’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
The UIGA has now taken a stand, condemning the Red Bull driver’s actions and issuing a public appeal to the FIA and all parties involved. Below is the full statement.

“Verbal attacks and a climate of hostility towards journalists and photographers are unacceptable and undermine the fundamental principles of professional respect and press freedom.
“In particular, the incident involving journalist Giles Richards – who was subjected to criticism and personal attacks – highlights a worrying trend. Accounts from those present contradict some of the versions that have been circulated, which risk damaging the professional reputation of members of the media. At the same time, tensions between drivers and photographers risk leading to increasingly restrictive measures that disproportionately affect the work of the press.
“Mutual respect is essential, but it cannot and must not limit the media’s right to report freely and independently. We therefore call on the FIA to open a dialogue with all parties involved – from media representatives to the teams – in order to prevent any further deterioration in working conditions and access to information. A free, respected and protected press is not a secondary element, but a fundamental pillar of transparency and credibility in all sports, including Formula 1.”

Was Verstappen ‘summoned’ by Red Bull? This is what really happened

Reports from German outlet Bild claimed Red Bull Racing had called Max Verstappen in for talks after the Dutchman allegedly asked a British journalist to leave his media session. However, GPblog understands that no such meeting ever took place.
When contacted for clarification regarding a supposed discussion between Laurent Mekies and Verstappen, sources confirmed that no conversation of that nature occurred.

It also remains uncertain whether the journalist - who has since spoken out about the incident - was excluded on a one-off basis or could be barred from attending Verstappen’s future media sessions.
