Max Verstappen played down questions about his appearance in Salzburg, Austria, where he was spotted alongside manager Raymond Vermeulen meeting with Red Bull's top brass ahead of the Spanish Grand Prix weekend.
The four-time world champion arrives in Barcelona on the back of a costly DNF in Monaco, a weekend in which he had come agonisingly close to pole position before being denied by a sensational lap from Antonelli, who went on to claim his fifth consecutive victory the following day. Verstappen's race unravelled almost immediately, with a near-stall off the line followed by an early return to the pits and the retirement of his RB22. It marked his second DNF in the opening six races of what has so far been a challenging campaign for the Dutchman.

Verstappen delivers terse reply on Austria visit

As news of Verstappen's trip to Salzburg emerged, social media quickly filled with speculation over the purpose of the visit. Much of the discussion stemmed from recent reports involving Toto Wolff and Jos Verstappen, who had allegedly been in the Netherlands at the same time after also being seen in conversation together on Mercedes' hospitality terrace during the Canadian Grand Prix weekend.

Against that backdrop, Verstappen's appearance in Salzburg alongside Raymond Vermeulen to meet Red Bull's senior leadership only intensified the chatter. With the story generating plenty of attention across the paddock and online, it was inevitable that the Dutchman would face questions from the media in Barcelona as journalists sought further details about the visit.

However, Verstappen offered little insight when the topic was put to him by the media, including GPBlog. Rather than addressing the speculation surrounding the visit, the Dutchman shut down the discussion with a brief and straightforward response: "If there's anything new regarding what I'm doing, I'll let you know."

Verstappen seeks answers after Red Bull ADUO benchmark revelation from FIA

Asked for his reaction to the FIA identifying Red Bull as the benchmark in the ADUO rankings, Verstappen admitted the conclusion had caught many by surprise. The Dutchman revealed that discussions are ongoing with the FIA to better understand how the governing body arrived at its assessment, while also welcoming the fact that changes are already being introduced to the regulations for both this season and next.

Although he would have preferred next year's adjustments to go even further, Verstappen acknowledged that compromises are often required and expressed satisfaction that the direction of travel appears to be positive. The four-time world champion also described Red Bull's benchmark status as something of a mixed blessing. While outsiders may view the Milton Keynes-based outfit as the clear reference point, Verstappen suggested the feeling within the team is rather different. He stressed that Red Bull does not consider itself the class of the field, even if it is confident it is far from the weakest package on the grid.

Despite that, Verstappen praised the progress made by Red Bull Powertrains in such a short period of time, calling the achievement highly impressive. While admitting that reliability remains an area requiring further attention, he underlined how rewarding it has been to witness the commitment and determination shown by everyone involved in the project.
