Fernando Alonso is Aston Martin's preferred choice to remain Lance Stroll's teammate next season, GPblog understands. Should the Spaniard decide that he wants to continue racing in Formula 1 in 2027, the British team would be more than happy to offer him that opportunity. Two-time world champion Alonso is currently considering his future in the sport. The Spaniard - who is racing on home soil in Barcelona this weekend - is weighing up whether to continue for another year or step away from Formula 1. He is expected to make a final decision at some point this summer.
GPblog understands that Alonso does not need to worry about securing a seat. If he decides to extend his long career by another season and remain on the grid in 2027, Aston Martin is prepared to give him that opportunity. That comes as little surprise given the excellent relationship between the driver and the ambitious British outfit. Aston Martin would also like Alonso to remain involved with the team after his active Formula 1 career comes to an end.
The last time Alonso races in Barcelona?
In any case, it is almost certain that this weekend will mark the last time Alonso races a Grand Prix at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. Following this year's event, the race is not scheduled to return to the calendar until 2028.
"It's going to be a special weekend," Alonso said.
"Probably my last Barcelona race in Formula 1, so I want to say thanks to everyone. I will try to enjoy the weekend," he explained. "I will not be competitive and I will not be too long in the car in qualifying." Just a week ago, Alonso finally scored his first point of the season. Following a time penalty for Sergio Perez, the Aston Martin driver was promoted to tenth place in the Monaco Grand Prix classification several hours after the race had finished.
