Scuderia Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur has weighed in on the incident involving George Russell and Kimi Antonelli during the Canadian Grand Prix Sprint, describing the intra-team Mercedes situation as something of a “rich man’s problem”.
The Ferrari boss suggested that managing the clash between the two Mercedes drivers and the fallout handled by team principal Toto Wolff is a delicate but ultimately enviable dilemma given the team’s competitive position.
Early in the Sprint at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, Russell, who had claimed pole for the race, found himself in close combat with Antonelli. The brief wheel-to-wheel exchange forced Antonelli off track in an avoidance manoeuvre, leaving the young Italian visibly frustrated. The 19-year-old immediately voiced his displeasure over team radio and even called for sanctions against his teammate. Tensions briefly resurfaced later in the Sprint when the pair came close to contact again, with Antonelli running over the kerb while attempting a move on Russell.
Reflecting on the situation, Vasseur acknowledged both the difficulty and the competitive nature of such internal battles, while lightly branding it a “rich man’s problem” in his comments to French outlet Canal+: "That’s Toto’s job, not mine. First of all, it’s a rich man’s problem, because it’s all very well to be fighting for P2, but it’s always a complicated situation, because both are competitors,” he said.

“In every team, you can have this scenario; in every team, we’ve had it. The drivers are there to deliver results, too. And that rivalry often leads to performance, so you can’t count them out. But I think they handled it very well this morning,” Vasseur concluded.

Russell, Antonelli react to tension after Canada Sprint clash

Speaking in the aftermath of qualifying for the main race, Russell and Antonelli revealed what was said within the team in the hour between Saturday’s two sessions. The pair clarified that their bond remains strong and that the scrap won’t affect their respect for each other going forward.
Antonelli noted that the pair had had discussions to clarify the incident that played out and subsequently had a chat with Wolff to further clarify things. Russell also echoed the words of his teammate, adding that the pair had a discussion and stressing that there is now clarity on the manner in which they are allowed to race, particularly within the confines of respect for each other.

Russell further noted that he understands the frustration of Antonelli, who had taken to the radio to air his complaint numerous times through the Sprint, admitting he would have reacted in a similar fashion if the roles had been reversed.

Brundle finds Wolff's intervention role interesting

Earlier, Sky Sports commentator Martin Brundle found it “interesting” that Mercedes team boss Wolff stepped in personally to calm tensions between Russell and Antonelli following the pair’s battle during the Canadian GP Sprint Race.
Reflecting on Wolff’s radio intervention, Brundle noted that it was particularly interesting to see the Mercedes team principal step in personally to put an end to the situation, adding that, after reviewing the incident frame by frame, he could understand why Antonelli felt he should have been given more room during the fight: “It is interesting the headmaster has had to step in there and say ‘stop this’. Watching frame-by-frame, I can now see why Antonelli felt he was entitled to more racing room.”

The former Formula 1 driver also suggested the Mercedes team had realised how Antonelli was beginning to lose composure in the heat of the moment, pointing out that the Italian is still a teenager carrying enormous pressure as the current championship leader, with emotions briefly getting the better of him: “Mercedes have realised Antonelli was spiralling. He is a teenager, at the end of the day, and is under immense pressure. He is leading the championship, and his head just spiralled for a bit.”
