Unique Monaco brings excitement: 'No more silly lift-and-coasting'

Oliver Bearman is looking forward to the Monaco Grand Prix. While the 2026 regulations has not let the drivers from pushing to the limit so far, the Briton expects Monte Carlo to be an exception.
The Monaco Grand Prix on the streets of Monte Carlo is a unique challenge. Due to the heavy braking zones throughout the circuit and the lack of long straights, drivers will not have to worry about recovering energy by lifting off the throttle earlier than usual.
The British youngster is therefore excited by the next race on the Formula 1 calendar. He explained, speaking to GPblog, among others: "Maybe they'll be a bit more fun to drive, that could be nice. No, I mean, I don't think there's really much opportunity to innovate in terms of energy in Monaco, just because the limits with the speed, the reductions with speed, it's very early in Monaco for obvious safety reasons. Yeah, I think it's just going to be a bit more like last year where we can just drive how we want, use the gears that we want, not have to do any silly lift-and-coast and these things. So I'm actually quite looking forward to it, it should be good."
At next week's Monaco GP, there will be no parts of the track where drivers can use the so-called straight-line mode, and battery tapering is also set to begin at lower speeds. Instead of the 290 km/h threshold seen during previous weekends, the electrical assistance will begin to reduce much earlier, from approximately 200 km/h onwards.

Bearman aims to conquer corner balance limitations in Monaco

The British youngster looks forward to qualifying especially in the Principality. "I hope [to put in a good lap on Saturday], that's Monaco. Otherwise we can park the car and watch the race from the balcony," he said smiling.
Still, the youngster aims to get on top of various issues after the Canadian Grand Prix, where he eventually finished in the points in P10. However, he explained that the result was largely due to the incident and not necessarily achieved on merit.
He continued: "The car was so hard to drive. The performance is there, I can feel it, but just getting the characteristics to calm down a bit, that's the goal. That's what we're going to have to look into, especially before Monaco, because you've got to be confident against the walls there."
"Montreal is also really unique with the amount of bumps and so generally we're not really enjoying to run our car on the track. performance, it doesn't seem to work. So let's see if that also translates onto the flatter tracks, if we're still struggling with this kind of through corner balance limitation that we have. But this weekend, it's just been really tough to find confidence in the car, to push the entries. I feel like I'm risking to put it in the wall every lap, basically."
