Red Bull Racing advisor Helmut Marko spoke to the Austrian newspaper OE24 after the Grand Prix weekend in Spain. Although his frustrations about the collision between Max Verstappen and George Russell are not new to the Austrian, he also revealed something that annoys him even more than this unnecessary incident. Marko mentioned that, although Verstappen has now calmed down,
the problems are far from solved within the Red Bull team. "The car is too slow. This actually annoys me even more than Max's move. The gap is still three tenths to McLaren," started the 82-year-old. When asked about the fact that Red Bull seemed to perform better than earlier in the season, Marko stuck to his stance that this perception is quite misleading. According to the Austrian, McLaren is getting stronger compared to Verstappen and his team at every race.
When it was pointed out that Verstappen still often makes for an exciting race in the current
Formula 1 season, Marko acknowledged this. However, it seems an impossible task for the Dutchman to gain his fifth title.
"I try to cheer him up, we never give up, but something really needs to change about the car," said Marko.
Will Verstappen be suspended for the GP of Austria?
Due to his 'stupid action', Verstappen is
now on 11 penalty points. If he accumulates penalty points again in Canada, it will result in a suspension for Red Bull's home race in Austria. About 30,000 Dutch fans go to this event annually to see the four-time world champion in action, so it would be a huge disappointment if he were unable to race in this event.
Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen collided during the Grand Prix of Spain.
"That's absolutely not going to happen, he has himself well under control," said Marko on this matter. The advisor to the Austrian racing team also had an explanation for why Verstappen reacted the way he did when he had to let
George Russell pass on his team's orders.
"When you're constantly driving with the knife between your teeth, which he has done all year, sometimes it just becomes difficult. I also saw footage where Leclerc drives into Max at 300 km/h, for which Charles received no penalty. That of course frustrates him even more," concluded Marko.
