Red Bull Racing seemed to be on course for a podium finish at the Spanish Grand Prix
but, due to a strategic error and a collision with George Russell,
the Formula 1 race in Barcelona turned into a
disappointment for Max Verstappen. Former Formula 1 driver Christijan Albers does not mince words in his criticism of the
Austrian racing team. Verstappen drove a solid race, with an aggressive
strategy enabling him to apply pressure on the McLarens. In the Formula
1 podcast of De Telegraaf, Albers highlights the major advantage of driving on new tires at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. He found Red Bull's strategy to be clever.
Strategic Blunder by Red Bull
However, things went wrong in the final stages, when Red Bull called Verstappen in during the safety car. Albers is baffled by the decision. "They are so good at strategy, but this was a blunder. In hindsight, it's of course easy to discuss this, but I would have kept Max out," he judges.
According to Albers, with his used tires, Verstappen would have been better off playing a defensive role. "The McLarens then had six
laps to overtake him. That's not so easy. It would have been up to Max to make himself as wide as possible," he continues, referring to the Dutchman's first win after his impressive defense
against Kimi Raikkonen.
Albers Calls Collision with Russell 'Unwise'
Albers is clear about the incident with George Russell. "It was unwise, it should not have happened, but still it happened," he says. The former driver points out that being agitated is often an advantage for
Verstappen because it can be motivating. "This combination is inherent and you can hardly separate it anymore. If you have a certain character, then you can't change that. This combative spirit is innate."
Verstappen apologized afterwards and according to Albers, that should settle the matter, although the analyst thinks the Red
Bull driver was a bit terse. "It was simply a foolish move, and he has apologized. Admittedly, in a somewhat offhand manner, and that should be the end of it."
Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc also came into contact during the Spanish Grand Prix.
