Max Verstappen finished the second practice session for the Hungarian Grand Prix a few spots behind Yuki Tsunoda — and after the session, F1TV’s Ruth Buscombe explained how that happened. Friday at the
Hungaroring was a day
Max Verstappen would rather forget. He managed ninth fastest in the opening practice but dropped to 14th in the second session.
Meanwhile, Tsunoda took a different path — starting FP1 in 17th but improving to ninth in FP2, finishing ahead of Verstappen. That’s not something you see very often.
Understeer disrupted Verstappen's session
Former
Formula 1 engineer Buscombe explained the reason for Tsunoda's advantage over Verstappen in FP2 after the session: "
Understeer," she said in the F1TV broadcast.
''If there's one thing that Max Verstappen doesn't like other than interview questions, it is understeer, and he just doesn't like it.''
Though understeer was not the only issue for Verstappen this Friday, according to the former engineer: ''It almost looked like it was kind of like understeer on entry and then even like maybe oversteer mid-corner.''
She therefore concluded: ''It doesn't look particularly fun car to drive.''
Max Verstappen and Yuki Tsunoda
Will Verstappen use a more extreme setup than Tsunoda?
Buscombe expects Verstappen and Tsunoda to go in different directions with car setup on Saturday: ''One thing I would say is that he might be trying something a bit more extreme in terms of settings than Yuki.''
According to the Brit, Verstappen is someone who likes to take risks: ''He also likes to kind of, lick the stamp and send it to actually try to find the limits of the performance, whereas Yuki might be taking a slightly different approach.''
Nevertheless, we should not draw too many conclusions based on this one good qualifying from Tsunoda: ''I wouldn't necessarily read into it but obviously, he wasn't particularly happy, did look like he threw in the towel at one point".
