Mercedes technical director has revealed how the team managed to get to the bottom of the various technical issues that have sidelined both George Russell and Kimi Antonelli at different points this season, and explained why the problem should, in theory, be resolved going forward.
Both Antonelli and Russell have suffered one retirement each so far this season due to electrical battery-related issues, while the Briton was also hampered by an additional problem during qualifying in China that partially compromised his weekend.
Speaking on the Nu Silver Arrows Radio Show, Allison explained that, while stressing that the failures were not all identical, they originated from the same general area of the battery system. The technical director added that most of the key risk areas have now been identified and expressed optimism that, as updated battery modules are gradually introduced over the coming races, reliability across the Mercedes-powered field should improve.
“I think anyone who's a keen watcher of the sport will have seen that this has laid a few Mercedes engine cars low over the season so far. They're not all identical, but they do sort of originate in the same broad part of the battery. I think that most of the areas of risk have been understood. And with a bit of luck, when we start to sort of phase in the new modules into the racing season – we call the battery 'the module' – then our fortunes as a fleet should pick up. Obviously for us, that's an important thing. These DNFs are very, very painful.”

Allison also explained that when a failure of that nature occurs, teams tend to adopt a more cautious approach until the root cause has been fully understood. As a result, Mercedes initially chose to be slightly more conservative with the affected components, reducing the stress placed on the equipment in order to add an extra margin of reliability while investigations were ongoing.
“When a failure like that does happen, then in the first instance and perhaps before it's fully understood, then the team will tend to take a slight half-step backwards to be more cautious with the equipment, to push it slightly less hard, just to give a little bit of resilience to the kit that's obviously suffering.
“A different part of the team will try to figure out what was the root cause of that failure to design that out, prove that out and put something back on the table that is sufficiently robust. So you do a first intervention that is just to try to sort of give the vulnerable thing an easier life while then working on a proper cure that lets you really cane it.”

How a Mercedes' pit stop issue derailed Russell's Spanish GP

Mercedes deputy team principal Bradley Lord has revealed that Russell's race was hampered by a mistake during his final pit stop at the Spanish Grand Prix. According to Lord, a problem with the front-wing adjuster gun led the team to make the wrong adjustment, leaving Russell with a heavily oversteering car for the closing stint. That loss of balance cost him pace in the final laps and opened the door for his teammate to close in and eventually pass him.
“In our final pit stop, we actually incorrectly adjusted the front wing owing to a problem with the adjuster gun, and that meant that he was working with a very, very oversteer-y balance that certainly compromised his pace in the final stages”.

Russell admitted that recent races have not always gone the way he had hoped, acknowledging how difficult it can be for drivers when circumstances beyond their control affect the outcome or when performances fall short of expectations. The Mercedes driver explained that moments like these require resilience and a constant reminder of the journey that brought them to Formula 1 in the first place.
