Mercedes deputy team principal Bradley Lord has admitted the team made a mistake during George Russell's final pit stop at the Spanish Grand Prix, compromising his pace in the closing stint and ultimately allowing his teammate to catch and overtake him.
The British driver left the Barcelona weekend having reduced the damage in the standings, gaining 18 points on his teammate thanks to the latter's retirement in the closing stages of the race. Without that twist of fate, however, Russell would likely have found himself 71 points adrift in the championship rather than the current 50, while also falling even further behind second-placed Lewis Hamilton, who went on to win the Spanish Grand Prix.

Mercedes reveal pit stop issue that compromised Russell's pace

Speaking in Mercedes' customary post-weekend debrief, Lord revealed that Russell's race was further compromised by a mistake during his final pit stop. After spending much of the second stint dealing with understeer, the Briton was expected to receive a setup adjustment aimed at improving the car's balance. However, a problem with the front-wing adjuster gun resulted in the wrong change being made, leaving Russell with the opposite issue and a car that was heavily biased towards oversteer for the remainder of the race.
Rather than receiving the setup changes intended, Russell emerged from his final stop with a car whose handling characteristics had shifted dramatically. The incorrect front-wing adjustment left him battling a nervous rear end and a much sharper front axle, making the car considerably harder to drive. The issue proved particularly costly at a track like Montmelò, where tyre degradation and limited grip already place a premium on stability and consistency.

“In our final pit stop, we actually incorrectly adjusted the front wing owing to a problem with the adjuster gun, and that meant that he was working with a very, very oversteer-y balance that certainly compromised his pace in the final stages”.

Russell reflects on F1 reality with current issues "difficult to accept"

Russell admitted he is struggling to accept the difficulties that have affected the opening phase of his 2026 Formula 1 season, describing the situation as particularly frustrating given the amount of dedication required to reach the pinnacle of motorsport. The Mercedes driver explained that it can be hard to deal with setbacks when circumstances outside a driver's control have a negative impact on results, while it is equally challenging when the car's performance falls short of expectations.

"It’s tough. You know, it’s not an easy sport. We work every single day of our life to achieve this dream, and when things out of your control go against you, it’s difficult to accept. And if the performance isn’t where you hope for it to be, it’s also difficult to accept.
Despite those frustrations, Russell emphasised the importance of continuing to push forward and finding motivation even during the most difficult moments. He explained that drivers must constantly remind themselves why they chose this career and draw strength from the journey that brought them to Formula 1 in the first place.

Looking back on his younger years, Russell reflected on how he and many of his current rivals grew up watching established Formula 1 stars and dreaming of one day reaching the same stage. He suggested that, had someone told them 15 years ago that they would eventually be sharing a Formula 1 podium together, it would have seemed almost impossible to believe.
"We have to continuously dig deep every single day, dig deep, remind yourself why you’re doing this, and thinking back to, you know, Lando (Norris) said, when we were younger, looking up to the likes of Lewis and dreaming of being sat here. You know, we probably wouldn’t have been able to believe this 15 years ago, that we’d be sharing the podium together as a three."
